About Winchester University
The grand story of the University of Winchester starts with a mission that the Church of England had in the 1830s to build an organisation that would prepare teachers to work in poor districts. Bishop Sumner eventually founded the Diocesan Training School in 1840. Its primary location was 26/27 St Swithun Street, a large terraced house only a short walk from Winchester Cathedral. It then relocated to Wolvesey Palace before eventually moving to the purpose-built buildings on West Hill in 1860 – a mansion that is still at the centre of their campus today. The University of Winchester has been granted a Silver in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF). This result indicates the high quality of their teaching and the active engagement and hard work of all personnel to teaching excellence. The results are based on a variety of metrics supplemented by a written submission which prove that students from all educational levels accomplish excellent results at Winchester.
The University of Winchester campus has a friendly environment with a community feel, presenting first-class, sustainable departments for learning, teaching and student life. The campus is divided into ‘Quarters’: King Alfred Quarter, West Downs Quarter, Medecroft Quarter and Bar End Quarter. Student life is centred on King Alfred Quarter, within walking distance of the historic cathedral city of Winchester. Lately, the King Alfred Quarter has been restored to improve its buildings with the latest industry-standard devices, digital networks and AV technology.
