About Birkbeck University of London
Birkbeck, part of the University of London, is located in Bloomsbury in the academic heart of this globally important capital city. Birkbeck specializes in flexible evening study. Students use their daytimes to work, volunteer, do internships or pursue their passions and this combination of work and study enables students to progress professionally and gain valuable experience while they are still studying.
Birkbeck was founded in 1823 as the Mechanics Institution by George Birkbeck. His radical view that high-quality university education should be available in the evening for working Londoners and those who would otherwise not be able to study still drives the college today.
In what was considered radical at the time, the Institute allowed artisans and craftsmen to learn about science, art and economics. Seven years after it first opened its doors, the Institute began to admit women – one of the first institutions in the country to do so.
Birkbeck became part of the University of London 100 years ago, in 1920, on condition that it continued to provide flexible, evening teaching. In 2010, Birkbeck introduced three-year undergraduate courses, all taught on weekday evenings, to complement its traditional part-time, four-year evening-taught courses.
Today it is London’s only specialist provider of evening higher education, offering flexible learning to 18,000 students who predominantly study for their courses on a part-time basis and fit them around employment and family life.
Birkbeck is also a renowned research institution: 73% of its research was rated ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework. The university also holds a “TEF Silver” certificate which testifies to the quality of the teachings offered
The university consists of five schools in total, comprising 19 different academic departments.
In 2013, Birkbeck opened University Square Stratford, a new campus where those living or working in east London and surrounding areas can access Birkbeck’s high quality evening teaching on their doorstep.
The university also has links with a number of higher education institutions worldwide – including Hong Kong Shue Yan University, the University of Sao Paolo and Columbia University in New York – which allow for research collaborations among faculty and the opportunity for overseas students to combine their studies with a degree at Birkbeck.
