Woodbridge

Woodbridge is an attractive riverside town close to the Suffolk coast and is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It was built on the banks of the river Deben and has a history of shipbuilding, rope making and sail-making. Edward III in the 14th century and Sir Francis Drake in the 16th century used Woodbridge built ships. These days the river is silted up and can only be used by pleasure craft. However, the riverside walks are excellent, and birdlife is wide and varied. There are pleasure trips from Woodbridge down the Deben and it is a very relaxing way to travel. The famous Tide Mill is restored and can be seen working, depending on the tide, but at other times there is an excellent model which the staff will demonstrate for those showing interest. The Riverside Theatre nearby is a thriving cinema and theatre. Across the river is the famous Sutton Hoo Burial Site, which has recently been taken over by the National Trust who have developed the site with an education centre, restaurant, shop and exhibition and interpretation centre. This is set well away from the Burial site, so it still retains its atmosphere of mystery and calm even on the busiest of days.
