Oakham

Oakham is the County town of Rutland. Rich in history and character, Oakham is now a bustling market town situated about 100 miles North of London, 20 miles from Leicester and Peterborough, and less than an hour's drive from Nottingham. As the administrative centre for Rutland, many of the county's services are centred on this lively market town. Oakham market takes place every Wednesday and Saturday in the Market Place. There is a wide variety of stalls selling fruit & vegetables, fish and cheeses, bread, clothes, household goods and plants. Source: Rutland Online

It was built by Walkelin de Ferrers, a Norman baron, in about 1180-90. The remains of other parts of this fortified manor house lie beneath the grass of the inner bailey. It was surrounded by earthen banks and stone walls which had at least two towers. To the north were gardens and fishponds. Oakham Castle and it's collection of horseshoes can be found to the rear of the Market Place.
