Library Farnham Library Vernon House, 28 West Street, Farnham, Surrey, Tel: 01252 716021 Farnham Castle A magnificent castle overlooks the town of Farnham. Farnham is midway between Winchester and London and in 1138 Henry Blois started building the castle. It provided a fortification at this meeting of the highways and also hospitable accommodation for the Bishop in his frequent journeys between his cathedral and the capital. From these beginnings, there has developed a close link between Church and town for 800 years. There are guided tours on Wednesday afternoons. The keep is now administered by English Heritage and is open to the public during the summer from April to September and closed in Winter. Museum of Farnham The Museum of Farnham is situated in an attractive Grade I Georgian town house dating from 1718, known as Willmer House. Many original features inside the house have survived intact and at the rear a charming walled garden complements the building. The museum was opened in 1961. It is run by Waverley Borough Council and in 1992 underwent substantial restoration work to preserve the fabric of this important building. Waverley Abbey Waverley Abbey, situated about 3 miles south of Farnham station was built in 1128. It was the foundation house in England of the new Cistercian order of monks where manual work was encouraged and the Liturgy simplified. The reliance of lay brothers to work the land proved very attractive to the uneducated so by 1150 there were five other communities in England, including Fountain, Reivaulx and Tintern. St Andrew's Church There was a church on this site five hundred years before the present building was begun in the eleventh century. It is a Late Norman/Early English church, though there are later additions. The most recent was in 1865 when the tower acquired its perpendicular top and the famous chimes. The line passing just above the clock face shows clearly where the tower did end. Before this the tower had been topped by a small cupola surmounted by a weather vane, perhaps to provide shelter for a watchman in less peaceful times.
