Channel School of English

General Info

Channel School of English is a friendly, family-run business, established in 1973 and run by Patricia and John Swan. It is a small school, catering for students in multi-lingual groups with up to 33 nationalities per year, and being the only language school in the town, the student population is low, even at peak time. The school itself is an attractive red-brick building. Situated in a quiet residential area of Ilfracombe, it overlooks the town's main park which contains beautiful gardens, tennis courts and the students' social centre. All classrooms are equipped with tape-players and black- or whiteboards, and have been specifically designed to encourage pair- and groupwork, thus maximising classroom use of English. There is also television and video, and overhead projector facility. There is a reception area, interview room and noticeboard which keeps students up-to-date with academic and social programme changes. There are also showers and changing rooms for the use of sports students, who also have the use of the sports equipment provided free by the school.

Accommodation Info

Country Cousins has been running Homestay programmes successfully for over 40 years. Our aim with the programme is to absorb students completely into English family life. They live as part of the family and join in with daily activities. Welfare has always been one of our greatest concerns. We regard our English host families as playing an extremely important role and so all host families are carefully selected, visited and inspected by our experienced Welfare Staff, under the personal management of Director, Jose Brinkmann. We also check host families with the Police and local Social Services and Welfare Staff are always on hand to liaise with students and families should any misunderstandings arise. Our English host families are in general from farming, professional and business backgrounds. Our aim is to provide students with a comfortable and secure environment. Families provide full-board accommodation and care for students as one of the family. For young people, aged 7-19 we place students with a young person of a similar age wherever possible and shared interests/hobbies. We also need to know the type of environment which is best for the guest. Children taking part in a Homestay visit will need to bring pocket money to pay for entrance fees, personal expenditure and so on. £25 per week is normally sufficient. We can also arrange for whole families to stay with an English host family. This is also ideal if experiencing the English way of life is desired. Adults can also learn English quite naturally by staying with an English family and sharing their life.
