General Info

St John's Wood School of English was founded in 1952, and was one of the first English Language schools to be established in London. SJW School is a small, family-owned school with ten classrooms and a maximum of 90 students. At SJW, no one is a stranger - We believe that our clients are also our friends, and in fact, around 25% of people studying at SJW School are friends, relatives or colleagues of former SJW students, or clients making a return visit! SJW School is located in the St John's Wood area of central London, in Travel Zone two. It is a pleasant, residential part of the city and there are numerous pubs, cafes and restaurants nearby. The world famous Saatchi Modern Art Gallery is behind SJW, and the EMI Studio, where The Beatles recorded their albums, is five minutes away in Abbey Road. SJW School has a comfortable Students' Lounge, with TV and coffee facilities. Each classroom contains a 'mini-library' from which students can freely borrow a wide range of books - all at a language level appropriate to the class. Audio and video tapes can also be borrowed. Free Internet access is available at lunchtimes only.

Accommodation Info

Most SJW students choose the friendliness and economy of HOMESTAY with a local British host family. SJW homestays are all inspected, approved and allocated by us. They are located in the north west area of Inner London - Travel Zones two or three - and the total journey time to school varies from about 2 minutes to about 40 minutes. SJW School is located in Travel Zone 2 . SJW hosts are mainly middle-aged couples, though some are retired, single or widowed, and some are younger, professional people. Homestay can be allocated to match the student's dietary, religious or other needs. Our host families are not teachers, but are talkative, amiable people, and we feel that the homestay experience can be an important and positive part of the student's stay in London. There are four homestay options - A, B, C, D: A. Single room, with breakfast and evening meal B. Shared room, with breakfast and evening meal C. Single room, with breakfast only D. Shared room, with breakfast only Hotel and Bed and Breakfast accommodation is also widely available.

Social Activities

SJW School offers a wide variety of optional activities for adults after class: theatre & cinema visits, pub crawls, greyhound racing, discotheques, football games, museum & gallery visits, TV shows, restaurant evenings, sightseeing, and Saturday excursions to towns outside London. There are normally four events each week. Activities held inside SJW School are free. Some outside activities (cinema, theatre etc) need to be paid for. Naturally, some students prefer to organise their own social activities, but SJW School always encourages students to mix with people of other nationalities, and to speak only English after class!
