Description
Our foundation courses are divided into five main disciplines: Business/Law, Science, Engineering and Art and Design, as well as our pioneering Medical Course. Students can go on to study a variety of different subjects at a wide range of universities following a grounding in one of these disciplines by mixing components from different pathways. Each course has two major areas: The general core section and the subject-specific section. The general core section forms the basis of all foundation programmes and consists of English for non-native speakers, Mathematics, Study Skills and Information Technology. The content of the subject- specific section varies according to the foundation course chosen and the intended course of study at university. Projects and work experience may also form part of the course. All courses are assessed through coursework and examinations, with the exception of the medical course which is assessed by examination only. Teaching methods consist of a mixture of classroom lessons, lectures, seminars, tutorials, work experience, role-playing, debating and self-study. Course length: Normally 3 terms. Possibly 2 terms for January entry (3 terms = 1 year) One-to-one tuition at an hourly rate £35 per hour available.
Entry Requirements
Foundation courses are specifically designed for overseas students whose academic qualifications gained in their own country may not be recognised by British or overseas universities. In this situation many students find the A level system inappropriate and time consuming. Foundation courses not only provide the passport to gain university entry, but also help students to understand any differences in the curriculum, acclimatise to the country and, where necessary, improve their English. Students are required to be of high grade GCSE/IGCSE or AS level standard or comparable and be proficient at English to approximately Cambridge First Certificate level in order to undertake these courses, although pre-sessional English courses are available if required.
