Sandy beaches, rugged limestone cliffs and the moorland – the county of Devon is one of the most visited regions in England. A Mediterranean atmosphere, cultural heritage and a young vibe make Devon a very popular destination for English language courses.

The town of Exmouth, where the Sprachcaffe school is located, is one of the pearls of Devon’s coastal towns. In the city center, flowery parks attract many visitors, and you can easily pass an afternoon on a shopping expedition through the pedestrian area. Water sports enthusiasts and nature lovers also get their money’s worth here.

An important component of a language course abroad is your accommodation; you need somewhere to relax after a long and eventful day, and to process what you’ve learned and experienced. Your accommodation is also a great place in which to talk about what you’ve done and perhaps to plan recreational activities with others.

We want you to feel comfortable during your English course, so we offer three different types of accommodation in Devon from which you can choose the most suitable option. All of the accommodation types offer you the opportunity to communicate with other people – whether locals or other students – and practice your newly-acquired language skills with them.

Apartment

You have the opportunity to live with other international students in a shared apartment. You can choose between a single or double room. The bathroom and fully equipped kitchen are shared.

Overview of the apartments:

  • Single or double room
  • Shared used of bathroom and kitchen
  • Basic room cleaning once a week
  • 10 to 15 minutes’ walk to school

Guest House

You can choose to stay in a guest house in Devon. There is a choice between single and double rooms, which all have a private bathroom. Double rooms can only be booked by students who travel together, however.

Breakfast is included in the price. Rooms are cleaned daily. Bed linen as well as towels are provided and changed daily.

The language school, city center and the nearest supermarket are all within 5-10 minutes’ walking distance.

Homestay

You can also book accommodation with a selected homestay in Devon. You can choose between a single or double room, and there is full board: breakfast and dinner with the family, and a packed lunch.

The advantages of this accommodation are clear: you can practice the English you learned in class and therefore continue learning.

Some homestays are near the school, while others are reachable by bus. It is necessary to purchase a bus ticket.

Your satisfaction is particularly important to Sprachcaffe. In order to select our homestays in Devon we therefore use the following criteria:

  • Shortest possible distance between the school and the homestay
  • A single or double room must be available
  • Standards and level of comfort should conform to standards typical of the country
  • The availability of the hosts plays a major role
  • Full board must be offered

Devon offers a wide range of sports such as kite-surfing, horse riding, sailing, wind surfing, scuba diving, golf and cricket.

Exeter is the regional capital of Devon and has many attractions such as the Norman cathedral, one of the best examples of its kind, the ruins of Rougemont Castle, which date from the eleventh century, and Athelstan\'s Tower from the Saxon era. The more adventurous can explore the Underground Passages, medieval passageways open to the public under the city centre. Exeter also boasts a new luxury shopping and cafe quarter, as well as the Quay area where you hire canoes or bikes or enjoy a leisurely lunch by the water.

Nearby attractions include Woodbury Castle and the regional capital, Exeter, with its Norman Cathedral and café culture. Attractions to the south include The Butterfly Farm and Otter Sanctuary at Buckfastleigh, Dartmouth and of course Plymouth, home to the Plymouth Gin Distillery and the National Marine Aquarium. To the north, beyond the Exmoor National Park, lies Clovelly, an ancient fishing village, seemingly untouched for hundreds of years.

The national parks of Exmoor and Dartmoor, famous for their wild horses and rugged scenery, are well worth a visit. After a long walk across the moors, relax in one of the traditional thatched pubs and try one of the local beers or a cream tea.

Excursions

Full day trips such as a Totnes to Dartmouth River cruise will allow you to explore the unique town of Totnes, with its alternative lifestyle, then enjoy a cruise down the River Dart, bordered by vineyards and abundant with wildlife, and finally reach Dartmouth, with its ancient narrow streets, boutique shops and galleries and famous Castle. Alternatively visit Glastonbury, home to the famous music festival, but also long recognised as a spiritual and healing centre, linked to Druidism and Christianity. Visit the Tor, built on the \'holy hill of Avalon\' and Glastonbury Abbey which some believe is the final resting place of King Arthur.

You may recall the figure of King Arthur at Glastonbury whose ruins of the Benedictine monastery (600 BC) have blooming shrubs before Christmas. If you want to know more about these historical facts, you should read the fictional work "The Mists of Avalon" by Marion Zimmer Bradley. And do not forget to Torbay, the "queen of the coast," a very sophisticated city known for its concerts, gardens and shops.
